Five Rings Triples: Commissioned for New Music 20×12 as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

A project devised and produced by Third Ear was selected by New Music 20×12 to commission Howard Skempton to write a new work for church bells to mark the Olympic Games. This was broadcast by BBC Radio 3 on New Year’s Eve 2011/2012, and again on New Year’s Eve 2012/2013.

Bells have fascinated artists down the ages, from Tarkovsky to Martin Creed, Gavin Bryars and Brian Eno. For this commission, Skempton will work with the grain of the algorhythmic form of composition of method ringing, to ensure that the piece can be performed at as many churches as possible across the UK and internationally.

New Music 20×12 was a UK wide programme which consists of twenty outstanding new works, each lasting 12 minutes, which have been commissioned to feature centre stage of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. It was an independent project initiated by Jillian Barker and David Cohen, and is delivered by PRS for Music Foundation in partnership with the BBC, London 2012 Organising Committee and Sound and Music.
