Alexander von Schlippenbach Trio

Alexander von Schlippenbach, Paul Lovens and Evan Parker have been playing and touring together as a trio since 1970. Playing in the tradition of Cecil Taylor / Jimmy Lyons / Sunny Murray, this makes them one of the longest running small jazz groups in the world.

Three players who know each other’s playing inside out, having fun together, relaxed in the knowledge that they are playing with the best. John Eyles, BBC Review

Schlippenbach has been immersed in jazz from his early years studying piano, especially in the music of Thelonious Monk (whose complete works he has recorded). It was this understanding of improvisation ‘in the moment’ that he brought to his studies and work with composer Bernd Alois Zimmerman in the ‘60s, and that he’s mined creatively ever since.

Paul Lovens is one of the great European jazz drummers, who’s collaborated with everyone from Cecil Taylor and Mats Gustaffson, to Florian Schneider and Eberhard Kranemann (in an early incarnation of Kraftwerk).

Evan Parker is quite simply one of the most revered saxophonists today with a phenomenal technique and a grounding in jazz that builds especially on the legacies of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, and Lee Konitz.

Noszferatu

Founded in 2000, Noszferatu has pushed at the cracks of post-minimal and experimental music with music by members of the group – Joe Cutler, Dave Price (covered for this tour by Damien Harron), and Finn Peters – alongside more than 25 new commissions by composers including Laurence Crane, Christopher Fox, Paul Newland, Andrew Poppy, Jonathan Powell, Emily Hall, Howard Skempton, Luke Stoneham, Paul Whitty, and Frederic Rzewski.

This is one of the most compelling discs that I’ve received of music from contemporary British composers. … The strange thing is that it sounds more like a shrewd trio of improvisers with some smart tricks up their sleeves. Downtown Music Gallery, New York

Finn Peters comes from a family of musicians, which can be traced back to the 1600s. One of the UK’s leading flute and sax players, his music has been profiled by the likes of Gilles Peterson and Mr Scruff, and his Quintet won the BBC Jazz Awards Best Band in 2007, whilst Butterflies won Radio 1 Worldwide Awards 2009 for best session. More recently, his ‘Music of the Mind’ project has explored new ways of generating music using electroencephalograms and Brain Computer Interfaces.

Pianist Ivo de Greef first performed at the Ars Musica Festival aged 18, playing Maderna and Webern. Living in Paris since 2003, he has pursued his other passion: tango music, learning from Piazzolla’s associates Juan José Mosalini and Gustavo Beytelmann, playing throughout Europe, the US, Australia and Japan. Other solo projects include a tribute to Keith Jarrett.

Damien Harron is a co-founder of BackBeat Percussion Quartet with which he has received numerous awards including the Royal Overseas League Ensemble Prize (UK), the Concert Artists Guild Prize (USA) and the Gold medal at the Osaka Chamber Music Festa (Japan). He has a reputation as an adventurous and versatile performer and composer of new music with a special flair for theatrical works, and a strong interest in global styles of percussion playing. Harron has made recordings for Mode, NMC, NonClassical and Tzadik labels among others.
